The Potter Park Zoo – Entry Complex project is a very interesting project consisting of 4 new buildings. This project was a competitive bid project, and Haussman Construction Company was the successful general contractor.

The project consists of the following buildings: The Discovery Center, The Concession/Gift Shop, The Welcome Center, and The Admission Building. A total of 17,650 square feet of buildings, including site work and specialty items such as ornamental site fencing. The Construction Costs is approximately $2,900,000. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was on March 17, 1999 and the project was completed in March 2000. Groundbreaking was a very special day for many people, but especially for the people in the Zoological Society, who had worked so hard to make this dream a reality. Through their diligent efforts, the possibility of constructing The Discovery Center came to fruition.

These buildings are all wood framed structures with additional structural steel for interior support. The exterior walls are faced with a variation of split-face block, brick, and metal siding. These buildings will be used for many purposes, but mostly to aid children in learning about animals, and their natural habitat.

The Welcome Center will be used primarily as office space for personnel of Potter Park Zoo and the Zoological Society. Visitors of the Park, as well as the visitors from the Zoo will share The Concession/Gift Shop. This will also be the home of the new Zoovenier Shop, a place to buy memorabilia from your visit to the facility. The Discovery Center is the central learning center for children to spend time up close with animals. There are special rooms for this, as well as an area for meetings, to hold banquets, or classes. There are also offices for the Zoo personnel.
